Gary A. Speck, Conductor

The Miami University Wind Ensemble is comprised of the fifty finest wind and percussion performers on campus. Utilizing the player pool concept, the ensemble performs traditional wind band literature, chamber music, and new works entering the repertoire. The ensemble has won praise from many living American composers for performances or their music, including five winners of the Pulitzer prize: Michael Colgrass, John Harbison, Gunther Schuller, Karel Husa and Leslie Bassett. The ensemble has performed for the College Band Directors National Association in 1994, 1998, and at the national conference in 1999; for the Ohio Music Education Association in 1990, 1993, 1996, 2000 and 2002; and at the inaugural Atlanta International Band and Orchestra Conference in 1996. The ensemble has issued the compact disc recording "American Music for Wind Ensemble," to critical acclaim. Commitment to new music is a vital part of the ensemble's mission, having joined commissioning consortia for works by John Harbison, Lukas Foss, Joan Tower, Joseph Schwantner, Michael Torke, Richard Danielpour, and Daron Eric Hagen, among others. True to the spirit of an outstanding liberal arts university, the ensemble is open to students of all disciplines by audition each semester.
