THE PROGRAM

The Miami University swimming and diving program continues to grow and develop into a competitive presence in the NCAA.  Over the past 24 years, Miami Swimming and Diving has remained an aggressive force in the Mid-American Conference.  During this stretch, under the guidance of Coach Dave Jennings, the women have compiled a MAC dual meet record of 109-21.  The team has won 14 MAC conference titles, eight of which were earned in the last eleven years.  The program has had 82 Senior National qualifiers, seven Olympic Trial qualifiers, 27 NCAA qualifiers and 178 individual/relay MAC Champions.

Coming off another strong season, the women finished as the Mid-American Conference runner up.  The team remained undefeated in MAC dual meet competitions for the fifth straight year bringing the total to 39 straight conference wins.  The team’s overall record was 12-1 (7-0 in the MAC, 1-0 BIG TEN, 2-0 BIG EAST), which was one of the best in our program's history.  At our conference meet, the ladies broke the 200 freestyle relay record, which was set sixteen years ago.  We also had two individual MAC champions and one MAC relay champion.  At the meet, the women broke four pool records and junior Margaret Patrick swam a lifetime best 23.08 in the 50 freestyle to provisionally qualify for NCAA's.  Two of our swimmers were selected first team All-MAC and five of our swimmers were selected second team All-MAC.

Aside from their success in the pool, the team also recorded their highest cumulative GPA ever last semester, earning a 3.34 GPA, which ranked 29th in the nation.

The foundation of our success is based on the belief that our student-athletes must have great character and enthusiasm for Miami Swimming and Diving.  There are five fundamental qualities that our student-athletes must possess: Trust, Loyalty, Selflessness, Enthusiasm, and Passion.  When we combine these five fundamental qualities of Team, performance is a sure thing.

Each year, our training program is modified and refined to reflect the needs of both individuals and the team as a whole.  It merges philosophies of many of the great college and club coaches from around the country.

The RedHawk program offers innovative and unique coaching techniques that focus on highly specialized training both in and out of the water.  The coaching staff is made up of Head Coach Dave Jennings, Ed Edson (Asst. Coach), Todd Spohn (Diving Coach), James Carsey (Strength Coach), and Cindy Veraldo (Academic Advisor).

The RedHawks begin training during the first week of September and remain in-season until the MAC championships and NCAA’s in March.  During winter break, the Miami women travel to an exotic location for 10 days of intense training, team building, and fun in the sun.  In the last four years, Miami has traveled to Hawaii, the Bahamas, and Florida.  During the off-season, the women are allowed to train for up to 8 hours a week with the coaching staff until the summer begins.  During the summer, about half of the women train with their club teams, and the other half of the team spends the summer taking classes here at Miami and training and competing for our club program RedHawk Aquatics, which is coached by both our men’s and women’s coaches.
