SGC Game of the Week -- HexHex[8/28/2005 - Michael Beck]
Welcome back! Open Gaming starts back up this Saturday from 2PM - 7PM in 364 Upham Hall. This week, you'll be able to stab your friends in the back with the deviously simple, delightfully mean-spirited, and wickedly fast-paced card game of HexHex. In HexHex, players throw Hexes around the table trying to get them to go off on the other players, thereby gaining points. The winner at the end of the game gets to make up a rule for the next game.

SGC Game of the Week -- War of the Ring
[4/14/2005 - Michael Beck]
This week at Open Gaming lead the armies of the Free Peoples of Middle Earth or the might of the Dark Lord Sauron in War of the Ring, an epic boardgame based on Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. Either side can win militarily, but the Free Peoples best hope lies in guiding the Fellowship of the Ring into Mordor where it can destroy the One Ring and Sauron's power. The Shadow players must divide their resources between searching for the One Ring and conquering the Free Peoples. More details, including rules and strategy articles, can be found at the Fantasy Flight Games website.

War of the Ring can only accommodate four players, so if you would like to play, please reserve a spot with beckmd@muohio.edu

SGC Game of the Week -- Acquire
[4/7/2005 - Michael Beck]
This Saturday for SGC Game of the Week, we will present Acquire, the tile-laying game of corporate acquisition.

From the Wizards website:

Build a Corporate Empire!

Do you have what it takes to amass a fortune?

The companies start small, but they grow ... and merge ... and reform ... and merge again. Buy the right stocks, merge the right companies, and you'll become rich and powerful. Make the wrong choices, and you'll be left behind by the competition.

In Acquire, the classic game of corporations, you build, buy, and manipulate corporate conglomerates. Nurture your companies carefully for maximum return, but be careful--if they get too attractive, your competitors will "acquire" them and you'll be out the door.

Acquire combines sharp business sense with clever positional play on the board to create a simple, unique, challenging game that can be played over and over without ever getting stale. Tycoons of all ages should expect the unexpected in this race to riches.

GAMES Magazine Hall of Fame winner!

Rules and a FAQ can be found at the above link.

The outlaws are trying to kill the Sheriff, the Sheriff and Deputies are gunning for the Outlaws, and the Renegade is out for him or herself, ready to take either side on a moment's notice.

SGC Game of the Week -- Doom: the Boardgame
[2/15/2005 - Michael Beck]
ATTENTION! RED ALERT!

Attention all Marines! All UAC personnel be advised. There has been a code red security breach in the dimensional gateway research facility here at the Union Aerospace Corporation's Mars base. We are under invasion. I repeat, we are under invasion.

Report immediately to central command. If you are isolated from the main facility, seek out other marines, form squads, and engage the invaders with whatever means possible. The weapons at the Mars base are limited, but should be sufficient for neutralizing the invaders.

This Saturday at Open Gaming, three marine players will square off against the invading hellspawn player in the boardgame based off id Software's Doom 3 (I promise that you'll be able to see the board and pieces without need of a flashlight).

SGC Game of the Week -- Munchkin
[2/2/2005 - Michael Beck]
Kill the Monsters - Steal the Treasure - Stab your Buddy

Munchkin, the card game of the anti-roleplayer.

From http://www.sjgames.com/munchkin/game/:

Go down in the dungeon. Kill everything you meet. Backstab your friends and steal their stuff. Grab the treasure and run.

Admit it. You love it.

This award-winning card game, designed by Steve Jackson, captures the essence of the dungeon experience... with none of that stupid roleplaying stuff. You and your friends compete to kill monsters and grab magic items. And what magic items! Don the Horny Helmet and the Boots of Butt-Kicking. Wield the Staff of Napalm... or maybe the Chainsaw of Bloody Dismemberment. Start by slaughtering the Potted Plant and the Drooling Slime, and work your way up to the Plutonium Dragon...

And it's this Saturday's Game of the Week at 2PM in 364 Upham Hall! See ya there!

Each round, players choose from various roles which provide special abilities to aid in their goals of creating a Citadel. The Assassin can kill another role, thus causing it to miss a turn, while the Thief can steal the gold from another role. The Merchant increases the player's cash flow based on the number of trade districts the player has, and the Warlord can be used to destroy other players' districts. Michael Good was recently overheard as saying "I can play [Citadels] all day long!"

SGC Game of the Week -- Werewolf/Mafia
[8/26/2004 - Michael Beck]
Each week during Open Gaming, the Strategy Gaming Club will be promoting a game of the week. These games will consist of games that are not commonly played at the Strategy Gaming Club.

For the September 4th meeting, the game of the week will be Werewolf (aka Mafia). Werewolf is a party game of accusations, lying, bluffing, second-guessing, assassination, and mob hysteria. The group of players are secretly assigned the role of werewolf, seer, or villager. The villagers are attempting to rid their village of the werewolves while the werewolves are trying to kill off all the villagers. The problem is only the seer has the power to determine if someone is truly a werewolf or not, but the seer is as easily killed as any other villager (so you don't really want to say you're the seer or the werewolves will come after you). Rules can be found at http://www.eblong.com/zarf/werewolf.html
