Events

The Russian Club holds meetings every other week and sponsors a variety of events from potluck dinners to dances. Below you will find when and where club meetings are held, as well as, events hosted by the Russian Club. Russian tea and candies are provided at all meetings.

 

2006/2007:

Meetings are held in 124 Irvin at 5 PM

September 11th- First Meeting

September 25th- Raili and Richard Robertson spoke about their experiences living in Slavutich, near Chernobyl.

October 9th- Novgorod Presentation

October 24th Halloween Dinner from 6-8 PM at Western Lodge

 

November 6th- Dr Nathan Light spoke on the folklore of Kyrgyzstan and Central Asia.

December 5th- Pizza Party in Shriver

 

 

 

October 6th, 2004 - Dr. Doug Rogers - a Postdoctoral fellow in the Havighurts Center who spent over a year living and working in a small town in the Urals region. He recounted his experiences with images and anecdoates to introduce key aspects of rural Russian life at the turn of the twenty-first century.

October 20th, 2004 - Professor Howard Blanning - A professor in the Department of Fine Arts who spoke about the experience of Miami students who sang in secondary schools, the types of Russian students they encountered, along with other stories.

November 10th. 2004 - a showing of the Russian verion of Winnie the Pooh along with cookie decorating, tea, and wonderful conversation.

January 19th, 2005 - Benjamin Sutcliffe - Dr. Sutcliffe explained how he first became interested in studying Russian and showed some interesting slide from his first trip in 1987.

February 2nd, 2005 - Mr. George Fowler - Mr. Fowler spent a year of his university studies in Voronezh, Russia, where he studied balalaika for the first time, taking clases at one of the city conservatories. While doing translation work in Paris in 1996, he continued his musical studies at the Serge Rachmaninoff Conservatory and played in the St. Georges Balalaika Orchestra. He gave a short performance at the meeting.

February 17, 2005 - Dr. Stephen Norris - Dr. Norris recounted many of his own experiences in traveling in Russia and his interest in studying the Post-soviet experience.

March 2nd, 2005 - Venelin Ganev - Dr. Ganev discussed the black market for rock music in communist Bulgaria.

October 25 (Tuesday), 2005 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm - Western Lodge
The annual Russian Club Halloween Dinner--always a big hit-- Dress up in Halloween costume, eat hard-to-find Russian cuisine (bliny, shasliki, pelmeni, kvas, etc.), and enjoy the music of the official Russian Club band (Russian pop, folk music and American 50s music).

November 8 (Tuesday), 2005 @ 5:00 pm - 313 Harrison Hall.
Oana Godeanu will be speaking to the club about the political and cultural relationship between Russia and her native Romania. She has an M.A. and is a visiting professor from Romania at Spiru Haret University.
