HISTORY OF THE ORGANIZTION

The society was founded at Syracuse University and incorporated at Albany under the laws of the state of New York on the Twenty-Fifth day of May, 1914. Since that date it has grown into national prominence as a champion for excellence in mathematics. Today there are over 300 chapters nationwide. A chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon may be chartered only in an academic institution whose standards are excellent in all liberal arts departments and particularly in mathematics.

In 1948 and 1949 a careful investigation of the quality of faculty, academic standards, program requirements and library holdings was made to determine if Miami University was qualified to uphold the standards of Pi Mu Epsilon and spread its scholarly spirit and ideals. The petition for election as the Ohio Delta chapter was submitted to and approved by the national council of Pi Mu Epsilon, and the Ohio Delta chapter at Miami University was chartered on April 16, 1949. Since that time the Ohio Delta chapter has actively promoted scholarship and mathematics.
