One of the primary missions
of the Miami University Steel Band is to bring the experience of a
non-Western music performance to regional youth. Since its inception the
ensemble has performed hundreds of concerts in public and private schools
throughout Ohio and Indiana. Students and teachers alike have responded to
these performances with great enthusiasm, and the band has been invited to
return to many a school.
These concerts are designed
as educational performance demonstrations, and can be tailored to address
audiences of any age group. Each performance lasts approximately forty-five
minutes and covers the following topics:
1. historical
development of steel drum instruments
2. introduction of the five basic steel drum
instrument types (lead, double tenor, double second, triple guitar, bass)
3. introduction of steel band rhythm section
instruments (drumset, congas, brake drum)
4. demonstration of idiomatic musical styles
The Miami University Steel Band reaches out to regional schools every year
in early May. To find out more information, or to schedule an appearance in
