Joining the steel band at Miami was probably the single best decision I made in college. The group is composed of a wonderful mix of people, roughly equal in its composition of music majors vs non-majors, men vs. women, and across grades/ages, as well as talent and experience. Whether it is a rehearsal, a performance, a tour, a social event, a recording session, or a chat with the band's hilarious, laid back yet competent director, it's an almost guaranteed enjoyable time. In addition, due to the high caliber of the Miami Steel Band, the students are able to work with the best musicians/composers/soloists in the steel pan realm. As a recent graduate of Miami, I will miss my time in the band, but will carry with me the friendships and memories I have made during my stay.
