The steel band program at Miami University comprises two ensembles: the advanced band performs regularly, while the beginners ensemble serves primarily
as a training experience and prerequisite for admission into the advanced band. Most students come to Miami University with no prior experience on steel
pan instruments, and so the beginners ensemble is where most people get their start in the program. Auditions for the beginners ensemble are held during the first week of classes each semester and are open to all students of Miami University. Being a music major is not required to join the steel band, but some prior experience in music (choir, band, or private instruction) is helpful. Auditions ensure that members have the ability to read music notation, but also test the student's musical aptitude, sight-reading ability, and rhythmic competency. Students must have the ability to read music notation in order to pass the audition. Once accepted, students spend one semester in the beginners ensemble. In this setting, the members spend most of their time gaining proficiency on one type of steel pan instrument, but also have lessons on the history of steel pans, typical musical styles, and other pertinent issues related to the steel band idiom. Students who complete the one-semester beginner band experience can progress to the advanced band. The beginners ensemble meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. For more information, please contact Chris Tanner |
