The origins of the Miami University Fencing Club are shrouded in the mists of indecipherable paperwork and speculation. We're sure an actual history of the club exists somewhere, we just haven't found it.
We do know that there was, at one time, a varsity fencing team. The accounting forms of yore indicate that the club has existed at least since the early 1980s. A former member has said it was actually founded around 1995. Perhaps it was defunct for a time. We're not sure.
The club is operated by student officers. Some members had fenced before joining, but the majority had no prior experience. Several members have USFA ratings.
Members of the club compete in several tournaments every year, including 'The Duel at the Dock' in Columbus run by Salle Aramis (pictured on home page) and 'The Widowmaker' -- an event presented every spring since 1999 by the Miami University and Cincinnati Fencing Clubs.
It is important to note we are a club, not an intercollegiate team. We practice together, travel together and pull for each other, but we pay our own tournament fees and (usually) fence as individuals. Our goals are to improve ourselves and instruct others.
