Welcome
Back Tips to Remember
Welcome to Miami University! We're glad you are here.
In many ways, being on a college campus is like being
in any city, town or community, so you must become acquainted
with its structure, layout, and people. You will receive
lots of information in the coming weeks that will help
you do just that at Miami. Below we list some tips that
we hope you follow as you get adjusted at Miami University.
These tips will be discussed further in your residence
hall meetings and at www.oxfordoffcampus.org for off-campus
students.
SAFETY
While it is tempting to behave as if you are still in
your family’s home or believe that Miami is isolated
from the rest of the world, we must all remember that
we live in a greater society. While we are relatively
safe at Miami, crime occurs everywhere in our society.
Miami is no exception—for example, a sexual assault
occurred last year unfortunately, and the perpetrator
remains at large. So remember to:
Lock your doors at all times.
Use the buddy system when you go out at night.
Do not let anyone into your residence hall or apartment
that you do not know.
If you choose to drink, do so legally and responsibly.
Check out www.muohio.edu/police and www.cityoxford.org
for more safety tips.
SOCIAL NETWORKING
There are lots of ways to get connected with fellow
students: social gatherings, in-class, hall programs,
joining any of the more than 300 student campus organizations,
and now electronic media (e.g., Facebook; MySpace).
While there are many benefits to using Facebook or MySpace
to socially network, remember the following:
The information you place on these sites is public.
Everyone, including future employers can see what you
post.
What you place on these web sites (even if removed)
remains cached.
While you might perceive that what you place on these
sites is private, it is subject to the law
SEEKING HELP
Periodically everyone needs assistance, and at Miami
there are many ways to obtain help with academic work,
navigating Miami’s administrative system, finances
and personal issues. You can turn to your Residence
Hall staff, the office of the Dean of Students, an academic
advisor, or a faculty or staff member for help. There
is also now an on-line email address where you can pose
a question and have the question addressed in an email.
The email to which you can write is: Studentadvocacy@muohio.edu.
As capable Miami students you have the potential to
accomplish many of your academic and personal goals.
By remaining focused on your goals, following a few
guidelines and common sense, you increase the chances
of your Miami years being safe and successful ones.
Best of luck and enjoy the months ahead.
