How ASG is Organized

Preamble
of the ASG Constitution
In the belief that the
students have the right, as well as the obligation,
to play a clearly defined and significant role in the
formation and application of institutional policy affecting
both academic and student affairs, and in the belief
that a democratic student government is the best means
by which this role may be played—We the students
of Miami University hereby create the Miami University
Associated Student Government.
The
Structure
The Associted
Student Government has a three branch structure similar
to that of our Federal Government with some characteristics
of a parliamentary system.
-
The
Executive Branch - consitists of the Student
Body President and the entire Executive
Cabinet. These individuals are responsible for
the day to day operations of the Associated Student
Government
-
Departments of the Executive
Barnch - Most cabinent members chair
or oversee a specfic department (just as, for
example how the US Secretary of Education is
the head ot the US Deparment of Education and
serves on the President's cabient). The Executive
Department of ASG and the people in charge of
them are as follows
-
Campus Activities
Council - Also
referred to as "CAC", the Campus
Activities Council is chaired by the
Vice
President of Campus Activities. These
people are responsible for all of ASG's
events that have become tradition at Miami
University. Homecoming, Kidsfest, Parent's
Weekend and Springfest are just a few of
the big events they plan. They are also
the people who bring big names to campus
such as Dave Matthews Band, Counting Crows,
MTV Campus Invasion, Jay Leno, John Mayer,
Bill Cosby, Dave Chappelle, Nappy Roots,
50 and more!

-
Diversity Affairs
Council - Also
known as "DAC" the Diversity
Affairs Council is chaired by the Secretary
for Diversity Affairs this group helps
promote cultural and intellectual diversity
on campus. Each year, DAC plans and holds
A.W.E.S.E.O.M.E. WEEK (Awareness Week: Everyone
Should Open Minds and Eyes)
-
Residence Hall Organization
- Also referred
to as RHA, the Residence
Hall Organization is chaired by the
Secretary
for On Campus Affairs. They are responsbile
for all issues related to residence life,
cooridnates all resience hall activies,
and plans events such as blood drives.

-
Oxford Tenants Organization
- Also known
as "OTO" the Secretary
for Off Campus Affairs is the head of
the Oxford Tenants Organization.
This ogranization helps to connect Miami
with the Oxford Community with such events
as the annual Red Brick Rasta, helps students
become more aware of their rights and responsibilites
as tenants, and tends to issues facing Miami
students who live off campus.
-
Student Legal Services
- The Vice
President of Student Services is responsible
for Student
Legal Services helps provide quality
and affordable legal advice and representation
to Miami Students
-
Budget Committee
- The chairman
of the funding committe is the Vice
President of Management this committee
is responsible for administering and reviewing
the funding process for student organizations
each year.
-
Traditionally, even those
who don't nessecarily have a "department"
to chair, still have their own staff to
help that cabinet member with his or her
duties
-
The Legislative
Branch - is chaired by the Executive
Vice President and consitists of the Student
Senate which has 49
democratically elected representatives all
of whom serve on a committee.
Twenty four (24)from on-campus districts, twenty one (21) from
off-campus districts, (three) 3 representing all of our
fraternites at miami, and 2 representing our commuter
students. The senate serves both a legislative
function to tackle the issues on behalf of their
constituents. Also, the senate plays an advisory
role, submitting proposals to the
University Senate (not to be confused with
the Student Senate) and the Student
Affairs Council for approval and implementation.
-
The Judical
Branch (website)
- Student Court Justices serve as student
advocates, informing students as to their rights
and responsibilities according to the handbook,
as well as jurors for those students "on trial"
for non-suspendable disciplinary cases. Student
Court is also the final interpreter of the ASG Constitution
& Bylaws, and hears cases brought against the
Student Senate or Executive offices.
