Who Are We?

The Hueston Woods Student Naturalist Club is a service organization devoted to assisting and improving the Hueston Woods State Park's Nature Center. The club's primary functions involve overall maintenance of the center and its animal residents, as well as creating public awareness through education. In addition to supporting the Nature Center, the Naturalist Club also aims to enhance knowledge and understanding of nature within the organization and abroad.

What is the Nature Center?

The nature center is a place where the public can come to be educated on Ohio's native flora and fauna.  Indoor, interactive displays help make learning about wildlife fun for kids and adults. Also, there are reptiles, birds, and mammals housed at the nature center.

What Kinds of Things Do We Do?

When we are out at the nature center one of our primary duties is to take care of the animals.  We put the animals out for display, clean their cages, feed them, enrich their lives, and more.  This is a really good opportunity for anyone looking for the animal experience which is necessary to be admitted into vet school.  There are a lot of hands on opportunities with the animals.   Another  really important function of the volunteers is also to educate the public about the natural histories and importance of all the animals at the park.  Its really great to see people get excited about these animals that many aren't really familiar with.  Of course, when we are done with our park duties we spend time getting to know one another through hiking, canoeing, parties, trips, and other fun events.  Many good friendships are formed in this club.
