Greek Week 2008

175 Years…and the Competition Continues

Dear Participants of Greek Week,

On behalf of the entire Greek Week Executive Board, we would like to thank you for your continued support of and participation in Greek Week 2008: 175 Years ... and the Competition Continues. This year, we bring to you a well-rounded, fulfilling week, with greater opportunities for all chapters and an emphasis on the five core values of our Miami Greek Community: Scholarship/Learning, Service/Philanthropy, Community, Leadership and Brotherhood/Sisterhood.

The success and enjoyment of Greek Week 2008 depends on you. We will take care of the logistics, and you just have to have fun. The week does involve intense competition, but ultimately, it is a time when we have unity and strength in numbers. Let’s show everyone why we’re one of the strongest Greek communities in the nation.

We encourage your support and attendance at as many events as you can. Greek Week 2008 is a celebration of the past, present, and future of Miami University’s great Greek tradition.

Please take a few minutes to review the rule book and discover all the changes for yourself. We hope that you enjoy this week of philanthropy, competition, excitement and most importantly fun. We’ve worked very hard with the Greek Week Leadership to bring you Greek Week 2008: 175 Years ... and the Competition Continues.

Good luck to everyone!

Sincerely,

Greek Week 2008 General Rules

I.  Eligibility

  • Only students in good academic standing and not on any form of conduct probation are eligible for participation in any Greek Week 2008 event.  They must also be in good standing with their respective chapters.  Students are eligible only through their fifth year of school.  If a member takes “Alumni” status within the chapter they are ineligible to participate in Greek Week, even if they are full time students.
  • Each participant must have accepted a bid prior to the last day rosters can be updated (as set by the Greek Week Executive Board and/or Cliff Alexander Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life and Leadership) and must not be currently sitting on a given bid during Greek Week.
  • Any person who has participated in a varsity sport on or 365 days before a given event is ineligible to play in that sport.  A person is considered a varsity athlete if they are included on a team roster or identified by coaches, advisors, or official team members.  Varsity athletes found participating in or attempting to participate in his or her sport in Greek Week will result in the elimination of their chapter from that particular event.
  • Club athletes are eligible to participate in all Greek Week events.
  • In the event of disqualification from Greek Week, the Logistics Committee will randomly draw another chapter to participate in all paired events.
  • Members of Greek Week Exec have no restrictions in regards to the number of events in which they may participate; however, if they are participating in an event, they hold no authority for the entirety of that event.

II. Identification

  • Proper identification must be produced upon the request of the Logistics Committee at any time before or during an event to ensure fair and honest participation.  The Logistics Committee reserves the right to check IDs at their discretion; unannounced.  If a person cannot produce a proper Miami University Student ID, that person will be prohibited from participating.  The chapter is subsequently responsible for finding a legal alternate to replace the participant.  The Logistics Committee will have a copy of each roster from every sorority and fraternity at each and every event to ensure verification.
  • You must check in 15 minutes before the start of an event unless otherwise stated. All IDs must be present at check-in. Chapters who fail to check in within the allotted time period will be disqualified from the event (at rules committee discretion).

III. Events

  • Each chapter will be responsible for the following items to receive the 15 bonus points* given for hosting an individual chapter event: **
  • Start your event on time (15 min. grace period is allowed).
  • Having enough chapter members to run the event.
  • Making sure that those chapter members have a working knowledge of the rules and regulations of your event(s).
  • Host teams are prepared to field extra teams in the event that a fraternity/sorority pairing does not participate.
  • Cleaning up your designated area within one hour of the completion of your event.

*NOTE: The 15 point bonus will be left up to the discretion of the directors and rules chairs.
**See attached “Greek Week 2008 Event Hosting Sheet (pg. 11)” for reference.

  • Holding Roster Positions:
  • The proper number of student ID cards (to fill that events roster) are required NO LATER than 15 minutes before the start of the event unless otherwise stated. Otherwise, once the event has started, the roster remains, and no substitutions can be made. (See following exception B2).
  • Someone coming from an event which overlaps the next event they are to participate in may show up late if, and only if their Miami ID has been presented 15 minutes prior to the event.
  • C.  Referees during events have the power to warn, or disqualify from the game or match, any

player, substitute, or manager who commits any of the following gross violations:

  • 1. Persistently addresses the official with regards to a decision.
  • 2. Makes derogatory remarks about or to the officials or opponents.
  • 3. Commit acts derogatory to the officials or tending to influence his/her decisions.

D.   In case of injury, the referee shall allow reasonable time out.
E.   No member of Greek Week Exec may check-in their own fraternity or sorority
IV. Fighting/Sportsmanship/Cheating

  • Fighting will not be tolerated at any event.  If a fight breaks out, the teams involved will receive NO points for that particular event.  Also, the people involved in the fight will not be allowed to participate in any other Greek Week 2008 event.  Further action may be taken against the chapters involved.
  • Each chapter begins with 30 sportsmanship points. There will be a 10 point deduction for the first infraction, and 10 more for the second. Events which qualify as poor sportsmanship include (but are not limited to) taunting, excessive derogatory remarks made against another chapter, excessive profanity, etc.
  • If a chapter is found to be cheating, then the Logistics Committee reserves the right to penalize the accused chapter as they see fit. Penalizations can include (but are not limited to) point deductions from the category of “sportsmanship,” disqualification from that particular event, or disqualification from Greek Week 2008 completely.

V. Rules for Weather

  • In case of severe weather, most outdoor events will be rescheduled for September 20th.  Chapters unable to sponsor their events because of severe weather (for this reason only) will still be allotted the 15 points for their event.  Chapters participating in the event will not receive any points unless the event is canceled AFTER the start of the event
  • Rainout Locations: Bandstand and Closing Ceremonies will be held in Millett.  Other event’s rainout locations and times will be announced at least a day in advance

VI. Small Chapter Combined Teams

  • All chapters with a total membership of 30 or less are eligible to combine with another chapter.
  • Combined teams are OPTIONAL and self-selected by the chapters and must be done of their own accord. Combinations will not be done by the Greek Week Executive Board.
      • Each chapter combination may not exceed 3 chapters.
      • Each combination may not exceed a total of 30 a members, regardless of the number of actual participants.
      • All chapter combinations must be gender specific.
      • Each chapter must be an active member in good standing of NPC, IFC, or NPHC at Miami University.
      • Chapter combinations may occur across governing councils.
      • Each chapter must be recognized and in good standing with the Cliff Alexander Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life and Leadership.
  • All combined chapters must be approved by the Greek Week Executive no later than 14 days prior to Greek Week opening ceremonies. (August 28th, 2008)
  • Once chapter combinations have been approved they cannot be broken and the chapters must remain combined throughout all Greek Week events.
  • All chapter combinations will be recognized as one entity during Greek Week and will receive joint recognition and/or reprimand for any and all actions.
      • Chapters will be penalized as one entity for any rule violations.
  • Combined chapters must run their assigned event(s) as one entity and all members are equally responsible. Combined chapters will act as one entity within all paired events.

Chapter Chair Responsibilities

I. Rosters & Eligibility

  • Rosters will be collected from the Cliff Alexander Office. It is the responsibility of the Chapter Chair to ensure that the roster is up to date by the specified date. If not, then complications may arise and certain members may not be allowed to participate in the week’s events.
  • Make sure that each participant from your chapter has their ID CARD with them at ALL TIMES during the events.  Failure to do so may cause your chapter to be eliminated from that particular event.
  • Speak to the Greek Week Logistics Committee if you suspect a violation of eligibility.  Resolution of any discrepancies will be handled best if brought to our attention, but impossible if kept quiet.
  • Verify that no member of your affiliation who has been identified as a member of a varsity sport within the past 365 days is participating in a related event.  Club sports athletes are allowed to compete in Greek Week
  • Varsity Ineligibility List

II. Responsibilities

  • Eligible participants will be determined through rosters on file with the Cliff Alexander Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life and Leadership. It is the responsibility of chapters to submit updated rosters to the office prior to the beginning of Greek Week to ensure that all current undergraduate members and new members are eligible to participate. Failure to do so will result in ineligibility of members not listed on the roster currently on file.
The Greek Week Chair is responsible for organizing any event which his/her chapter sponsors. This includes:
making sure that the proper equipment is available
defining the rules (in conjunction with the Logistics Chairs)
clearly communicating the rules to the officials
conducting the event meeting with the Greek Week Committee and other Greek Week Chairs the night before the event
making sure that the event starts on time, and proceeds efficiently
being available to answer any questions about the rules of the event
cleaning up after the event
The Greek Week Chair is the sole spokesperson for the chapter in regards to questions about rules, discussions with officials, or complaints to the Greek Week Committee. Only one Chairperson per chapter may act as the spokesperson for the entire week. If for any reason, a Greek Week chair cannot be present at an event, a head contact person must be designated.

Finally, please remember that the Greek Week Chair is responsible for setting an example of integrity and honor for his/her chapter for the week. If the Chairperson does not meet up to his/her responsibilities, the chapter will struggle with Greek Week. Open and efficient communication between Greek Week Chairs and the Greek Week Committee and a positive attitude of cooperation on both sides will help to make Greek Week 2008 a success for all involved.

Greek Week 2008 Social Service Events

Mission: Greeks working together with the Oxford community to make the world a better place by incorporating the community and service side of the core Greek values into Greek Week through our service events.

CROP Walk/ Run (Christian Rural Overseas Project)

Description: Founded in 1946, Church World Service is the relief, development, and refugee assistance ministry of 36 Protestant, Orthodox, and Anglican denominations in the United States. Working in partnership with indigenous organizations in more than 80 countries, CWS works worldwide to meet human needs and foster self-reliance for all whose way is hard.
Within the United States, Church World Service assists communities in responding to disasters, resettles refugees, promotes fair national and international policies, provides educational resources, and offers opportunities to join a people-to-people network of local and global caring through participation in CROP WALKS, the TOOLS & BLANKETS Program, and the "Gift of the Heart."
The Greeks and Oxford community work together to raise money to stop world hunger. (25% of money raised goes to local organizations that fight hunger.)

The 15 members from your chapter should report to Phi Kappa Tau BY 12:00 PM on Saturday, September 13, 2008.  All runners/walkers will receive a card to be stamped at various points throughout the (newly routed) course.  To receive all the points for this event, all 15 participants from each chapter must walk. (No partial credit will be awarded.) If chapters have less than 50 members then 20% of the chapter must walk. Each walker must turn in their stamped cards at the end of the walk; the final checkpoint is inside Yager Stadium.  A failure to abide by these guidelines will result in disqualification and possibly other point penalties.  There will be ABSOLUTELY NO CHEATING TOLERATED.

*All participants do so at their own risk.*

CROP WALK graphic

Once again, the Greek Week 2008 Social Service Events play a large role in connecting the Oxford and the Greek communities.  We are asking for your cooperation and encouragement in the promotion and explanation of the following events within your chapter.

Non-Perishable Food Drive

Description: This event will involve the Greek community collecting a variety of non-perishable food items for the Oxford Food Pantry.

All chapters are responsible for collecting and delivering non-perishable food items (see list of appropriate donations) to Cook Field between 12 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Friday, September 19th.

In order to receive all 20 points each chapter must donate one item per chapter member.  An extra 5 points will be awarded to the chapter with the highest number of items per chapter member.

If a chapter collects more than 15 of the same item, then those items exceeding the 15 will not be included in the chapter’s final item total. The excess (beyond 15 of the same item) will be included for bonus points only if the minimum one item per member is reached.

Blood Drive

Description: The Red Cross counts on Miami University Greek Week to supply them with the most blood they can receive all year at a single event.  Please encourage your chapter to get as many people as they can to donate blood. PLEASE stress the importance of this event.  Not only is our Greek society recognized, but also Miami University is recognized nationally for this event.

15 people from each chapter must SUCCESSFULLY donate to receive all 20 points. Chapters under 50 members must have 20% of their chapter donate successfully for points. If you do not have the minimum of people donate, then you will receive no points.  No partial credit will be awarded for attempting to donate.  Members from your chapter are to report to the Multipurpose Room in Shriver Center on September 16th and 17th between the hours of 9 AM to 5 PM.

After the 15 minimum donations from brothers/sisters, each chapter is eligible to have additional donations made “in their name”- by Greeks or non-Greeks.  The fraternity and sorority that provide the most successful donors will receive an extra 5 points in addition to formal recognition in front of their peers.

We have included certain criteria for which people are unable to give blood, and we would appreciate it if you would try to avoid sending people who do not meet these qualifications.  This will allow us to contribute as much blood as possible to the cause in the allotted time frame.

Each donor must:
Weigh at least 110 lbs.
Be free of cold and flu symptoms
Not have received a tattoo or piercing in the past year
Have been off Acutane for one month
Not have a history of hepatitis
Not have donated in the past 2-3 weeks

  • Preliminaries will run twice, taking the best time of the two to determine advancement.  In order to eliminate controversies, each team’s final time will be the average of the two timers in their block.
  • Any ties during any of the rounds will be resolved by a run- off of the tied teams.  The best team will advance, even if slower than a previous time.
  • The building line judges will determine when the pyramid is set.
  • Each timer will be assigned to a building line judge.
  • One starter will begin the event simultaneously for the three blocks using a starter gun.

DIMENSIONS:

  • The course will consist of three blocks, 25 yards by 25 yards each.  Each block will have a starting line and a building line.
  • Each block will have one starting line judge, two building line judges, and two timers.

PENALTIES:

  • One false start will be allowed each round for each team.  A second false start will result in elimination.
  • If a team builds a pyramid, but is not past the building line, then that run is disqualified and they do not receive another run to replace it.

Playing Rules

  • Each heat will consist of three teams competing in different blocks.  Each block will have lines marking the starting and building lines.
  • At the sound of the gun, the three competing teams will run past the building line and build the pyramid in a 4-3-2-1 ascending order.
  • It is the responsibility of the building line judge to inform the team if they have not cleared the building line before beginning to build the pyramid.
  • All ten participants must kneel in a conventional kneeling position with their hands and knees touching either the ground or the people below them.  No participant may be allowed to lie down in the prone position.  No forearms or elbows may touch the ground or the person below them on the pyramid.
  • The pyramid will be considered built when each participant is in a controlled, set position with hands and knees on the ground or the person below them.  No participant is allowed to be lying down or use other body parts for support.
  • Each building line judge will call out “set” when the pyramid is completely formed.  The timer assigned to each building line will stop their watch when “set” is called.  The discrepancy of each line judge’s time will be resolved by averaging the times.

    • A team may hit at the start of the match; however, they must move and hit once again within the first thirty seconds of the match.
  • JUDGING
    • A judge and an alternate will be provided for a fair and impartial decision of the winner of each pull.  These judges will also be responsible for:
      • a fair and impartial start to each pull
      • checking equipment for each team
      • checking for any physical aid given by callers
    • Two timers will be provided by Kappa Kappa Gamma.  These timers will be responsible for observing and timing locks.  They will warn the callers when there are 15 then 5 seconds left before the disqualification occurs.  They will also have the authority to disqualify any team they determine to be in violation.
    • A starter for pulls will be provided by Kappa Kappa Gamma.  She has the responsibility for starting each pull and, like the judges, will have the authority to control fair and impartial starts.
    • Any team in violation of a premature start will be given one warning after stopping the pull.  If the team is guilty of a second premature start, that team will be immediately disqualified.
