Our Director:
Dr. Ethan Sperry
Born
in New York City, Ethan Sperry began studying conducting at the
age of eight, cello at the age of twelve, and singing at the age
of eighteen. He has earned a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy from
Harvard College and Masters and Doctoral degrees in Choral Conducting
from the University of Southern California. While at Harvard, Dr.
Sperry was assistant conductor of the Harvard Glee Club, music director
of Harvard Glee Club Lite, and the founding music director of the
Dunster House Opera Society. Since then, he has served as Director
of Music at the Roxbury Latin School, Conductor if the USC Men's
Chorus, and Director of Choral Activities at Santa Ana College in
Orange County, California. Choirs under his direction have toured
to Bermuda, Jamaica, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. In 1996, Dr. Sperry
brought the Roxbury Latin Glee Club to Rome, where they were selected
to perform a Papal Audience in front of 20,000 people. His Holiness
said that he "particularly enjoyed the singing."
As
a singer, Dr. Sperry has sung with some of the finest choirs in
the country including the Tanglewood Festival Chorus and Los Angeles
Master Chorale. He has sung under the batons of Rober Shaw, Helmuth
Rilling, Seiji Ozawa, Leonard Slatkin, Christoph Eschenbach, Mariss
Jansons, and Sir Simon Rattle and recorded with the Boston Symphony
and Boston Pops Orchestras, The Los Angeles Master Chorale, and
on several film soundtracks.
Currently,
Dr. Sperry is an Assistant Professor of Music at Miami University
where he conducts the Men's Glee Club and Collegiate Chorale and
teaches classes in music education. He is also the artistic administrator
of the Arad Philharmonic Chorus in Arad, Romania, where he appears
as a regular guest conductor of both the orchestra and chorus.
