MIAMI UNIVERSITY WINS FIVE INDIVIDUAL STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS AT THE OFA 2011 CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT

Miami Forensics took THIRD PLACE in President's I Division and TENTH PLACE in the Open Division at the National Forensics Association's National Tournament this year. Miami made an impressive showing with great preliminary round rankings and numerous breaks to out rounds. Leading the team into out rounds was Rahul Guha, accompanied by Liz Miller, Sarvesh Chelvanambi, Meg Harris and Sankalp Malhotra.

Miami Forensics took THIRD PLACE in combined sweeps at the Pi Kappa Delta Comprehensive National Tournament. Individual events highlights include Rahul Guha as National Champion title in After Dinner Speaking (a speech designed to entertain an audience), Sarvesh Chelvanambi as National Champion in Rhetorical Criticism (a speech that analyzes a specific communication act through a rhetorical lens) and Nicholas Masso in Rhetorical Criticism. On the debate side, Bekah Linton and Joe Horine were National Runner-ups in Novice Parliamentary Debate. Additionally, Miami had a number of speeches break into quarter and semi finals, as well as a number of top speakers across all divisions of Parlimentary Debate.

Miami Forensics took SECOND PLACE at the Ohio Forensics Association State Tournament, taking home State Championships in five of the eleven events (Impromptu Speaking, Rhetorical Criticism, Duo Interpretation, Informative Speaking and Dramatic Interpretation).

Miami Forensics took SECOND PLACE at the Ohio Forensics Association State Tournament, with our competitors finalling and winning many of the events. We also hosted the tournament in Miami's own Farmer School of Business and look forward to doing the same next year. Thanks to all of the Ohio speech teams that made it and we'll see you next year. In the meantime, check out some of our photos from the weekend.

Miami University Forensics (Speech & Debate) is open to any Miami student.  The team travels to roughly 30 Speech tournaments (usually two on the same weekend in what are called “swing” tournaments) throughout the year.

Our Parliamentary Debate program will be traveling to about a dozen tournaments next year (usually 1 per weekend).

We also travel to many national tournaments, including the American Forensics Association and/or National Forensics Association national tournaments, the Interstate Oratory Association tournament (the oldest intercollegiate speech competition in the US), the National Parliamentary Debate Association tournament, and possibly the Delta Sigma Rho – Tau Kappa Alpha Honorary tournament.  With over 20 national champions the Miami University Forensics program has established itself as one of the best in the country.  Our continued commitment to excellence will provide you with the resources and opportunities you need to become a national champion.

Miami University Forensics covers the cost of participation completely.  The university pays for tournament fees, judging fees, lodging, transportation and even food when we travel.  There is no additional student fee for being on the team.  In addition, the university offers forensics team members priority registration which means you register before the general student population to make sure you can get a class schedule that is conducive to traveling with the forensics team.  This is a feature very few other institutions offer forensics students and it is a sign of the support the university has for our program.
