Index of Editors and Publishers
of British Literary Annuals
Published 1823-1830

This table has been compiled from my inspection of annuals, Faxon's Literary Annuals & Gift Books (1823-1903) (with my corrections and emendations) and Boyle's An Index to the Annuals (1820-1850). Faxon provided a bibliographic description, publisher, editor and years published in his index.  However, many of the volumes were described based on second and even third-hand knowledge, which has created many errors in the index.

Luckily, many of these titles can be found throughout the United States in university collections, including the New York Public Library-CRL, Yale University, University of South Carolina, American Antiquarian Society (predominantly American), Brown University, Library of Congress and Fales Library (NYU). I have reviewed several of the more popular titles in the collections of the New York Public Library (and from my own personal collection).  Some of the annuals have been re-bound in library bindings.  However, the NYPL Rare Book and Pforzheimer Collections house volumes in their original paper boards and/or in the fashion of nineteenth-century contemporary bindings.

I have included some of the more popular titles just barely beyond the 1830 boundary to emphasize the evolution of the genre (e.g., Heath's Book of Beauty was a late entry into the annual publishing field; however, this annual was borne of the demand for "beauty" in the annuals and was the progenitor of subsequent imitators).  For a complete review of the numerous (or "epidemic," as it has been described) titles published 1830-1856 (the heyday of the annuals phenomenon), see Faxon's "Chronological Index" (129-40), which lists British and American titles published between 1823 and 1902. (Click here to view a sample of that index within this hypertext.)

The titles in blue are the first volumes of popular annuals. Where appropriate, editors' names are linked to their list of contributions to the annuals.
